When May comes around, it is always a good idea to check the plants in your bio-lake, cutting away dead leaves and removing foliage or other debris which have collected on the bottom of the lake during the winter months.

The waterlilies in the phyto-depuration area tend to double over time and therefore need to be thinned out to prevent suffocation of other water plants. At the same time the harmony and balance of the bio-lake are safeguarded.

The peculiarity of waterlilies, and part of their natural beauty, is that they are essential for shading the bottom of the lake. This way, the water stays cooler and the production of algae is reduced, due to less direct sunlight.

Plants which oxygenate the water should never be lacking among the phyto-depurating plants of a bio-lake. Elodea Canadensis, also called “water weed”, is frequently mistaken for algae since it thrives under water. This plant, once used by Native Americans as a drug, plays an essential part in the eco-system of lakes, as they form the natural habitat for a number of invertebrates which contribute to the phyto-depuration of water.

Other plants, such as palustrine or shore plants must be left to their natural cycle and do not need any upkeep or maintenance.

A certain quantity of algea is normal for a bio-lake, as this does not create imbalances or health hazards to the eco-system which contains it. Nevertheless, algae can be removed by using natural products which are readily available on the market, allowing the water to clear in just a few minutes.

It also a good idea to always remember to keep the water of bio-lakes or pools at the proper level, replenishing them by adding water directly from the water pipe. If water from a well or a spring is available on the same property , it may be used as well, but only after testing , to insure hygenic safety.

Even thoaugh it may be lots of fun to have our pets enjoy the water and be with us while we are having a swim, it is advisable not to allow them inside bio-lakes or pools, as bio-lake or pool systems and structures could easily receive damage.

One more thing to remember before plunging into the clean waters of a bio-lake or pool: skin sunscreens should be removed! They pollute the water!
